Quán Ăn Ngon Restaurant

Location:
138 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, District 1
Tel: 08/829-9449
Description:
The restaurant is situated just by the main road side, and sometimes it causing the traffic jam. Taxi will stopped suddenly whenever there is someone needs their services. The good part about this restaurant is they resemble all the typical Vietnamese foods into here.
To make you feels the genuine local foods here, the restaurant decoration set up just a typical Vietnamese environment. The banana trees are planted in the compound, the food stalled located at the side of the restaurant has the appeal that you may see at the roadside in HCMC.
The restaurant has open air concept. There was a time when I having lunch here, and it started raining. The waiter was having hard time to set up the shelter, made of plastic to cover the tables from rains. However, there is still indoor for the customer if they prefer to.
Try to avoid coming here during the peak hour, means during the lunch and dinner time. The place is packed with people, and even sometimes you need to stand until near to the road side. Imagine the queue that you need to go through. Still, they are quite fast in this sense. As for today, I think I need to wait around half an hour during the lunch time, just because it is full house.
Another extra point here is the foods served here is considered cheap, and it is very clean as well. The waiter / waitress here has their own uniform to put on during their daily routine.

Foods:
There are many choices of local foods. I not really know how does the foods called since most of the time my local friend here will order my meal. When you are here, try to order a beverage / dessert called "che suong sa hot luu", an oddly delicious combination of coconut milk, tapioca pearls, water chestnuts and jelly worms, served in a tall glass with ice.

Ngoc Suong Marina Sea Food Restaurant and Bar

Location:
19C Le Qui Don Street, District 3
Tel: (848) 930 4209
Website: http://www.ngocsuongvn.com/

Description:
This is a nice restaurant. There is a live band inside the restaurant, and mostly they will sing English's oldies song. Probably Valentine just around the corner, they keep singing love song. The food that we ordered cost us USD51, inclusive of the drinks. This time, I did take some of the sauce that comes together with the dishes. The majority of the dishes are Vietnamese specialties.

Foods:
1. Shrimp with coconut juice
The shrimp is very fresh, and you can judge the shrimp with the reddish color hanging around the coconut. You shall dip the shrimp together with the sauce provided. The sauce is very salty, where you squeeze it with lime. However, when mix it with the shrimp, GOOD is the only word that you can describe. There is fire when the dish is served.

2. Grilled fresh cuttlefish
You can really taste the freshness of the cuttlefish. Once bite, you feels the elasticity of the meat in your mouth. Together with the chilli sauce, it taste better. But beware, don't put too much of the chilli sauce, as it is very hot......

3. Stuffed crab claw
This is how being described for the food. The crab comes together with meat, but I'm not sure what meat is that. Having difficulties communicating with the waitress to understand what is meat together with the crab. It is recommended each person takes one, as it is quite full once you finish it. You may dip the crab with the chilli sauce as well.

4. Spring roll with fish meat
Again, today we ordered the spring roll again. However, this taste better as it is served with fresh fish meat. What is special for this dish is because of the sauce. My friend told me that this sauce only available in this restaurant, and not other place around the town. The sauce is made of peanut.

5. Fried spring roll
This is just a normal fried spring roll, where you can get this dish from other restaurant as well.

6. Cockles with garlic
Again, the food serve is fresh. The cockles cooked with the garlic, and of course you may take the food together with the raw vegetable comes together in the plate. The gravy make the food more tasty.

7. Fried vegetable with garlic
We ordered this vegetable because all other foods served was seafood.

8. Others
On the way out from the restaurant, I saw this fresh oyster.

Nam Bộ (means South in Vietnam)

Location:
The location of the restaurant is in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh city. It is secluded in place, and usually only able to find this restaurant from the help of local people. So good luck in searching for this restaurant.

Description:
Has been to HCMC few times, but this is the only time that I took the food's photo to upload to the blog. According to the local people here, this restaurant has 3 branches across HCMC. So you gotta find the correct place. When I reach this restaurant, I guess they have around 200 tables (size like a mahjong tables) and is always full of people, and 99% is local here. Guess what, the reason is the food here is in reasonable price. The food you see below is less than RM100 altogether.

From the restaurant name, it is already mentioned as "South". Means this restaurant serving all the popular Southern food eaten by the local people here.

There is one thing that I missed out for this food trip, where I forgot to capture the photo for their sauce served together with the dishes. Actually the sauce here is quite unique, and most of the sauce is salty in taste.

Foods:
1. BBQ Piglet
The piglet taste just any normal bbq piglet that we have back in our country. Crispy is the keyword for this dish. However, you can see the process how they bbq the piglet, and it takes a of time to make it ready for customer. So many customers every night, imagine how many piglet they need to bbq every night.

2. BBQ Crocodile Meat

The meat is marinated with their special sauce. It is purely the meat, and nothing much then that. My friend took the meat and bbq it. I tried it, and you don't feels anything funny about it. If they didn't tell you that it is crocodile, you wouldn't know and keep eating. It is more delicious when you put together with the sauce that prepared for this food.

3. Vietnamese version of "Balut"

The food is served with small version of century egg. You need to peel off the shell, and what you see is shown in the picture below. But of course, it doesn't taste that bad since it is quite small in size. Take the embryo and apply the local sauce again, and quickly eat it before you vomit it out. Hahaha......

4. Coconut shoot

The main thing of the dish is the coconut dish. Together, they serve it with pork meat and some fresh prawn. You need to put the coconut shoot and pork into the small fried prawn biscuit ("har peng") and dip it to the sauce. Once get into your mouth, it taste sweet and sour. I didn't take the vege too much as I personally don't like to eat this vege.

5. Spring roll

This is just another normal dish for us. Nothing special here, as we can easily find the spring roll back in home country. The only different is you can take the spring roll together with the raw vege (without cook). It taste different in this case.

6. Others
This is fresh ikan haruan (snakehead fish) where they bbq it.
Besides that, they also bbq what.... MONITOR LIZARD.... see the below photo... when I took this picture, actually the tail is still moving.... wonder why on earth we dare to eat this... Of course I didn't eat this, as this is just for your viewing purposes....kekeke....

How to get there :If you are using NKVE, exit Sg Buloh (south exit). This is the first exit once you passed by Sg Buloh flyover restaurant, heading to Ipoh. Once you exit from the toll, turn left towards Sungai Buloh. Then keep left until you see a sign board heading to Subang, and turn left into Jalan Sungai Buloh. This is the turn that a lot of people will missed out. Watch out then. Once turn left, you need to keep right and head straight until you see the U-turn sign, on your right is BHP petrol station. Make a U-turn and turn left straight away to Jalan Welfare. As Jalan Sg Buloh road is under construction currently thus it doesn't allow you to right turn into Jalan Welfare but you got to make a U-turn in order to get to Jalan Welfare. When you are at Jalan Welfare, just go straight until you see a shop selling paint (Juton and ICI Dulux Paint), and turn left (before a clinic) into Jalan Perkhidmatan. Food :
1. Pun Choy
Where and how was Pun Choy invented ? It was said that Pun Choy was invented during the late Song Dynasty. When Mongol troops invaded Song China, the young Emperor fled to the area around Guangdong and Hong Kong. To serve the Emperor as well as his army, the locals collected all their best food available, cooked it, and put it in wooden washing basins. By doing so Pun Choy was invented. Today you find the famous Pun Choy at 新界围村, Hong Kong and Chinease like to eat Pun Choy during Chinese New Year.
This is my first experience with Pun Choy. My friend told me the famous one is at Restaurant LYJ at Sungai Buloh. We order Pun Choy, there are 2 types of serving from this restaurant, small one ( without abalone and scallop) cost you around RM280 and big one (with abalone and scallop cost you around RM480. We order the big one and this serving is enough for 12 persons. The restaurant use stainless steel basin to serve the Pun Choy. It consists layers of various type of food. One layer after another ...... What is in there ? Abalone, Scallops fried with eggs and fake sharks fin in a fried meehoon basket, prawns, half a roast duck, half poached chicken, braised chicken feet, braised pork and pork leg, fish (mau yau), broccoli, cauliflower, beancurd sheets, konnyaku jelly threads, chinese mushrooms and clams. I especially like the sauce although it is quite oily but it is very tasty when searve it with those meat.
Together with Pun Choy, since most of the food are meat or seafood, it comes with a plate of fried vegetables.

2. Paku Pakis Salad
One of the MUST order dish from this restaurant. This is first time I try the Paku Pakis cook as salad. You taste the freshness of Paku Pakis mixture with orange sauce, fish sauce, fried onion and etc. Very tasty!

Food:
1. Steam Seafood Pot
This is one of the famouse dish from this restaurant. The pot consists of 2 layers. First layer with mixture of seafood including prawn, lala, scallop and crab. Second layer is at the bottom of first layer thus it takes all the drip from the seafood in first layer and it will be used to cooked the vege soup later on when you finish the first layer seafood. I would say the freshness of the seafood was not that impressive when we had this dish, I am not sure whether it always the case. But the soup is very tasty. Seafood soup (without seafood) cooked with green vege and mushroom, you taste the freshness of vege while having the seafood soup .....I would say this soup is recommended to order but the problem is you can't have this soup if you are not ordering the seafood pot as it comes with it. As we have about 10 persons in each table, the seafood pot cost us RM115. Quite expensive.

2. Chicken Feet

This dish offer by the restaurant owner to us :). Maybe he knows that it is our first visit to their restaurant. Typically we always think free things is not that good ......but surprisingly this free dish is quite tasty.

3. BBQ Lamb

This is MUST order dish. I find the BBQ Lamb is very tasty. Brownish colour outside and inside still very tender and moreover with their home made mint sauce which make the taste of Lamb just nice. This dish cost us RM80 but Ithink the price is quite reasonable as it has about 7 ribs given.

4. BBQ Fish

The BBQ fish is kind of special as the fish is cover with salt. The fish that being used is Talapia. I have try this dish before in other restaurant before, thus I think there is still room for improvement for this restaurant. Anyway, if you haven't try this kind of dish before, you are order. The fish has no muddy smell although it is fresh water fish. Some people call this dish as 雪山飞狐 :)

5. Fried Bean

This is another dish that we order as recommended by the restaurant. I think it is quite normal, nothing really special but since we have order a lot of seafood and meat dish, so we decided to order some vege.

6. Fried Green Chili
This is another famouse dish from the restaurant. As first when the waiter recommend this dish to me, I was thinking it could be too hot to just take the chili like that? But the waiter explain tha it the big green chili not that hot thus I decided to try. When we try on it, in fact it is still acceptable. They fried the chili with sweet sauce and it is quite yummy. I will recommend people to order this dish.

7. Fried Beancurd with Egg
The beancurd cooked with fried egg and soya sauce. The taste is quite nice although this is not a special dish. Simple and nice, I would say.

8. Wet Rice
This is rice cooked with some vegetables and meat with some gravy. Surprsingly it is quite nice. The taste is not that heavy and it is pretty good.
